Mr. Unilateral Action Obama is at it again. This time, however, he's not concerned with importing cheap labor from our southern borders or liberating 4-5 million illegal immigrants already here. On Monday, Obama announced he's going to "reform" the global guest worker program by speeding up the process, importing hundreds of thousands foreign workers---who will most likely replace American workers at a much cheaper price. Via the Daily Caller:
“My administration is going to reform the L-1B visa category, which allows corporations to temporarily move workers from a foreign office to a U.S. office in a faster, simpler way,” he said in a speech Monday to a global investors summit at the Gaylord National Convention Center in Maryland. ”And this could benefit hundreds of thousands of nonimmigrant workers and their employers.”
What Obama doesn't mention is that American businesses can pay these "guest workers", (who can remain here for up to seven years), wages as low as the state's minimum wage. While Mr. Obama claims his "reform" will incentivize companies to invest in the United States, businesses are already replacing American workers for cheap foreign labor, offering virtually no protections for the American worker:
“There are no protections at all for American workers, or for the L-1B workers themselves,” Ron Hira, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology who is an expert in offshore outsourcing and industrial policy, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. A typical IT worker in India might make $5,000 a year, so a business could replace an American worker with that foreign worker and make a huge profit.
“Expanding the L-1B program will have exactly the opposite effect than the one President Obama claims,” he said. “Instead of attracting and creating jobs for Americans through foreign direct investment, his proposal will speed up the offshoring and destruction of good middle class jobs.”So much for putting American workers first. Under his current plan, (again, without so much as a notice to Congress), Mr. fast and loose with his pen and phone is intending to further devastate the American worker. And once again, his motives are leaving many of us scratching our heads. It certainly looks like another case of "if you like your American worker, you can keep him/her"---a familiar narrative of this administration.
